All the yoga classes at GYC are based on the works of the Yogi sage ‘Patanjali’. In brief, Patanjali’s yoga is known as Ashtanga which means eight limbs. These eight limbs prepare the body and mind for what is called Samadhi or the state of pure bliss. This all comes under the path of yoga known as Hatha. Hatha yoga encompasses many ‘styles’ of yoga known today in the western world such as Iyengar, Satyananda and Sivananda.

BEGINNERS/ONGOING – These classes are for people who are both new to yoga and those who have been students of yoga for many years. These classes are very popular for those wanting some time for themselves to learn and practice the art of yoga. The classes are a blend of all styles to give students a feel and understanding of what is most comfortable for them.

EXPERIENCED – This class is for people who practice yoga more than once a week and incorporate their practice into every day living. It is also for people who wish to learn more about yoga and themselves as they are encouraged to look deeper into their practice and themselves. Students need to have sound experience of yoga and understand the Sanskrit terminology and basic principles of asanas before they can enter this class.

RESTORATIVE – The aim of this class is to guide people into a yoga practice whilst ill or recovering from illness, using gentle methods with the aid of yoga equipment

PREGNANCY – A class which is conducted on a casual basis for ladies during any stage of pregnancy. No experience in Yoga is required. This is a class which encourages ladies to focus on themself for 90 minutes and have the opportunity to bond with their baby.

OVER 55'S - This is a class for people 55 and over. The class is designed to encourage people in this age group to learn first hand about the benefits of yoga in the advancing years and how aspects of yoga can help prevent illness, aches and pains. The physical component of the class is presented in a gentle manner and over time students are encouraged to practice the more traditional yoga postures and movements rather than just the basics and limbering movements. Meditation and relaxation techniques are introduced and practiced in each class. The emphasis of the class is focused around understanding the correct use of the breath.

RELAXATION AND MEDITATION – This class is specifically designed to assist people who may not be able to practice yoga in a physical sense due to injury or illness or for those who want to experience the benefits of traditional relaxation and meditation. This class is run in conjunction with the Cancer Council and in particular is designed for people with cancer, their carers and family.

YOGA FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH CANCER - This class is run in conjunction with the Cancer Council and is designed for people with cancer, their carers and family. The classes are conducted in a gentle manner and designed to help people improve their overall wellbeing, reduce fatigue and relax.
